A rescue operation is being undertaken for two swimmers who went missing in the surf near Mermaid Rocks, in North Bondi, amid strong surf conditions on Sunday evening.
Two people have been pulled from the surf, with assistance from the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, after they were reported missing earlier in the evening.
The person was handed over to paramedics on the rocks, who are providing treatment. Their current condition is unknown.
It is understood that the other person was rescued safely.
The incident follows a day of strong surf conditions across the state, with many beaches closed for the duration of the weekend as the remnants of Cyclone Uesi travels off the coast.
A hazardous surf condition remains in place along the coast from the Hunter to the Eden regions on Saturday evening, with people advised to stay out of the water.
More to come.
